Overview

The ABB ACS880 is ABB's flagship "all-compatible" industrial drive, positioning itself as a universal solution for both process drives (pumps, fans, compressors, extruders) and machine drives (conveyors, hoists, cranes, winders). Its defining technology is ABB's proprietary Direct Torque Control (DTC), which directly controls motor flux and torque at the inverter level without the current and voltage regulators used in conventional vector control drives. The result is torque response times of 1–2 ms and torque accuracy of ±1% without encoder feedback — performance that older technologies required a costly encoder system to achieve.

The ACS880 lineup spans from the frame R0 (0.55 kW wall-mount) through large cabinet drives exceeding 5,800 kW, all using the same DTC algorithm, the same Drive Composer commissioning software, and the same optional fieldbus adapter modules. This consistency means an engineer trained on an ACS880-01 (single drive) can commission an ACS880-07 (cabinet drive) without learning a new user interface or parameter structure — a significant benefit for plant engineering teams maintaining a large installed base.

Built-in functional safety functions (STO, SS1, SS2, SLS, SMS, SDI, SBC) are certified to SIL 3 / PLe and are embedded in the drive's safety firmware — no external safety relay is needed for the most common safety functions. The STO (Safe Torque Off) function stops drive output without cutting main power, enabling faster machine restart after safety stop events compared to contactor-based isolation.

Key Features

  • Direct Torque Control — no encoder required
DTC calculates the optimal switching sequence for the inverter IGBTs every 25 µs using a mathematical motor model, achieving 1–2 ms torque response and ±1% static torque accuracy without shaft encoder feedback. Encoder-less operation reduces sensor cost, eliminates encoder cable failures, and simplifies motor replacement on winder and crane applications.
  • SIL 3 safety — STO, SS1, SS2, SLS built-in
Integrated safety functions eliminate the need for external safety relay modules for the most common safety scenarios. STO stops output voltage safely; SS1 ramps to zero then activates STO; SLS limits speed to a safe value. All certified to IEC 62061 SIL 3 and ISO 13849 PLe — fully documented for use in safety case submissions.
  • Flexible fieldbus via plug-in adapters
Fieldbus connectivity is provided via snap-in adapter modules (FBA series) — PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, PROFIBUS DP, Modbus TCP, CANopen, DeviceNet, or EtherCAT. Swapping the adapter changes the protocol without any drive parameter changes, enabling a standard drive configuration across different plant network architectures.
  • Wide motor type compatibility
The ACS880 supports AC induction motors (standard and high-efficiency), permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM), synchronous reluctance motors (SyRM, including ABB's IE5 HE motors), and wound-field synchronous motors — with automatic motor identification (ID run) that calibrates control parameters for any connected motor in under a minute.
