Overview
Eaton's RMQ-Titan / xEffect is the successor to the long-established M22 pilot device range, representing Eaton's fourth-generation 22 mm panel control system. The 22 mm standard (per IEC 60947-5-1) is the dominant format for industrial pushbuttons, making it universally interchangeable between Eaton, Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Schneider, and other manufacturers — an important factor for panel standardisation across multi-vendor facilities. The xEffect range maintains backward compatibility with all M22 / M22-Titan contact elements, so existing contact block inventories are directly reusable with new xEffect heads.
The range spans: illuminated and non-illuminated pushbuttons (flush, extended, mushroom cap), three-position maintained selector switches, key-operated selector switches, illuminated selector switches, LED indicator lamps (8 standard colours), and emergency stop devices in 40 mm and 60 mm mushroom diameters compliant with ISO 13850 and IEC 60947-5-5. All devices share the same 22 mm panel cutout and mounting collar, enabling mix-and-match installation in the same panel without different drill sizes.
A distinguishing feature is the IP69K rating of the xEffect series — defined as resistance to high-pressure steam cleaning up to 80°C at 100 bar. This exceeds the IP67/IP65 ratings of most competitors and makes the xEffect range appropriate for food processing lines, dairy wash-down areas, and pharmaceutical CIP (Clean-In-Place) environments without additional protective covers.
Key Features
- Positive-Opening Contact Elements — ISO 13850 Safety — Emergency stop contact elements (M22-PV) use positive-opening action per IEC 60947-5-1 Annex K: the contact physically separates when the button is depressed, regardless of spring state or contact weld. Combined with a twist-to-release or key-to-release mushroom head, this meets the full ISO 13850 E-stop device requirements for safety-rated emergency stop functions up to PLd/SIL 2 in a two-channel circuit.
- IP69K — Steam and High-Pressure Wash-Down Rated — The xEffect front plate and collar achieve IP69K sealing (IEC 60529 / DIN 40050-9), the highest IP rating in the standard. This enables installation in meat processing, dairy, and pharmaceutical environments subject to daily high-pressure (100 bar) hot-water (80°C) cleaning without water ingress. Standard IP65 devices require full shrouding in these applications; xEffect does not.
- SmartWire-DT Integration — Eaton's SmartWire-DT (SWD) replaces individual control wiring with a daisy-chain communication bus connecting pushbuttons, contactors, and I/O directly to an SWD gateway on the PLC. Instead of discrete 24 V DC wiring for each button, SWD carries power and data on a single 8-conductor flat ribbon cable, reducing panel wiring by up to 80% and enabling automatic device detection and diagnostics through the gateway.
- Universal Contact Block System — Mix and Match — Any xEffect or M22 actuator head accepts any contact block from the range: 1 NO, 1 NC, 1 NO+1 NC, 2 NO, 2 NC, or spring-clamp terminal versions. Illuminated heads add a separate LED module (24 V DC, <1 W) that connects directly to a second contact block position without additional wiring. A single head can carry up to 4 contact elements stacked on the 22 mm carrier body.
